EducationUSA Pre-departure Orientations

Sampath Pamidimukkala

UNT student Sampath Pamidimukkala will discuss studying in the U.S. at the USEFI pre-departure orientation in Bangalore, India, July 12.

All EducationUSA Advising Centers offer Pre-Departure Orientation programs in June and July for students who have been admitted to undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. As your admissions season progresses, please remember to tell your incoming international students to contact their local EducationUSA Advising Center (contact information is available at www.educationusa.state.gov) to make sure they don't miss their orientation. Students report that attending pre-departure orientations in their home countries helps them better prepare and adjust to their new lives in the United States and gives them the opportunity to network with fellow students.

Recruiting in Latin America

Opening the Ecuador ISN American Education Fair

U.S. Ambassador Linda Jewel opened the fair; the photograph includes UNT International Recruiter Dickie Hargrave (far right) and the U.S. Ecuador Ambassador, Linda Jewel (second from right), along with two Ecuadorian students (left).

I recently returned from a recruitment trip to South America. I participated in ISN's American College Fairs in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santiago, Chile; Lima, Peru; Quito, Ecuador; and Bogota, Colombia. It was a busy tour; I visited all five locations over the course of just eight days!

The students I met were very impressed with UNT's broad selection of majors in both undergraduate- and graduate- level programs. Many were interested in UNT's Intensive English Language program; it is known in the field as one of the best such programs in the United States. I made sure that students were aware of the large Latin American population in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, the close proximity to South America and the North Texas moderate climate.

I also had the opportunity to visit International and American High Schools in most of the countries I visited. These schools have talented students, many of whom are looking to study in the US upon graduation. It was a great opportunity to promote UNT and make connections with Education USA advisors as well.

There are currently 21 students at UNT from the countries I visited.
