Welcome Center & Programs

Welcome Center and Programs Office:  940-369-8625

Mission

The International Welcome Center is the official “front door” for international students, scholars and visitors to the university.  The IWC supports the enrollment management mission of UNT by coordinating special programming and year-round orientation for international students in undergraduate and graduate programs at UNT, for UNT departments and in the Denton civic community.

Services
Students gather in the International Welcome Center. It’s a good place for conversation and meeting other students.  It’s the place to get advice from professional staff about how to live well in a new cultural and campus environment. Living in Denton, at Latitude 33 is easier for international students as a result of the on-going orientation programs and events hosted by the IWC on its Latitude 33 calendar of events.

Students learn about U.S. culture—from shopping for groceries and bikes to making appointments with U.S. doctors and dentists.  Each spring, the IWC coordinates a week-long Celebration of World Cultures which showcases food, music and dance, customs and dress of nearly 100 countries represented by UNT’s student body. Students proudly carry their nation’s flags in an enviable processional of colors and traditions to begin the celebrations during the week.
Each fall the IWC draws together students and educators to present lectures and cultural events to earmark the U.S. International Education Week.  In addition to these major campus-wide events, the IWC  and student staff coordinate many other programs:

  • Conducts mandatory student orientation each semester.

  • Supports international student organizations

  • Works closely with Global Interact, Denton’s community group to welcome students from all over the world.

  • Organizes welcome parties, shopping trips, tax & immigration seminars, and social-cultural events

  • Coordinates a cultural ambassador program which takes UNT students into the schools in Denton and surrounding communities for cultural exchange

  • Offers cultural diversity training workshops for UNT departments.
