English Language Proficiency

All applicants to UNT must show proof of English language proficiency. For International students, this is most commonly demonstrated through TOEFL. However, we accept more methods of English proficiency than most other 4-year universities in the U.S. because of the international experience of our employees and their knowledge of international curriculums.

See the list of acceptable measures below.
1. English study at IELI:

  • Completion of Level 6 of the IELI, this qualifies you to apply for:
    • All undergraduate degree programs
    • All graduate degree programs except English literature, which requires TOEFL scores:
      • MA: 577 paper/233 computer
      • PhD: 630 paper/267 computer

2. Completion of a program:

  • U.S. High School:
    • Official transcript showing graduation from accredited U.S. high school or U.S. Department of Defense School overseas—attended for at least 3 years. Remember! Send your SAT or ACT scores!
  • U.S. Degree:
    • Official transcript of U.S. Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s of Doctoral degree—Degree must be posted!
  • High School in English speaking country:
    • Graduation with a degree (High School- attended for a least 3 years, Associate’s, BA, MA, Doctorate) from an accredited school in a recognized English speaking country
