Obtaining a Visa
Visa applications are processed at U.S. consulates around the world. Find the consulate nearest you for information on the application process.
When applying for a visa, it is important to bring the following with you:
- Endorsed or Initial Attendance I-20 or DS-2019
- Valid passport
- Financial Documentation provided for I-20 or DS-2019 issuance
- Transcripts (if you are a student)
- Additional items as requested by the consulate nearest you
You cannot apply for a visa in the United States.
Very limited situations allow for visa applications in Canada or Mexico. Please consult an advisor prior to applying.
Entering the United States
J-1 visa holders may enter the United States up to 30 days prior to the start date on form DS-2019. If you cannot arrive by the start date, notify your department for approval.
Upon arrival to campus, check in with your department and register for J orientation via email.
