Fulbright Application, Timeline, and Checklist

Timeline

April 1, 2021 
The application cycle for 2022-2023 opens.

Spring and Summer 2021 
Applicants begin the application process. Applicants should schedule an advising session with the Fulbright Program Advisor (FPA) or Faculty Associate for Fulbright Programs.

September 3, 2021  
Last day to start an application. Applicants must begin an application by this deadline.

September 22, 2021 
Campus Deadline. Applicants provide a copy of their applications for the Fulbright Campus Committee Interviews.

September 27 - October 1, 2021  
Fulbright Campus Committee Interviews. Applicants attend the interviews and revise applications based on feedback. The dates for the Campus Committee Interviews are subject to change.

October 12, 2021 
National Deadline. This is the deadline to submit all components of the application. The final application—including any revisions based on the interviews with the Fulbright Campus Committee—must be submitted through the online application system.

January 2022 
Notifications. Applicants are notified of the status of their applications (non-recommended or semi-finalist) based on the National Screening Committee (U.S. reviews). Semi-finalists move forward to second round reviews (host country reviews).

March through June 2022 
Notifications. Semi-finalists are notified of final application decisions.

2022-2023 
Award Year. The program dates for each award vary by host country. The majority of awards will start in August/September 2022 with some awards starting in January/February 2023.

Checklist

Advising Meetings: Applicants meet with the UNT Fulbright Program Advisor (FPA) and/or UNT Faculty Associate for Fulbright Programs on a regular basis for guidance about the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and their applications.

Review Requirements: Applicants review the requirements and learn more about the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. 

Select Type of Award & Host Country: Applicants select the type of award and the host country for their application.

Prepare Application: Applicants prepare the following application components:

  • Applicants begin Fulbright's Online Application
  • Affiliation Letter (Study/Research Only)
    • Applicants identify a potential host university/institution, request an affiliation, and secure an affiliation letter from the host university/institution. Applicants upload the affiliation letter.
    • Applicants should provide a copy of their Statement of Grant Purpose OR a summary of their proposed project and qualifications when contacting a university/institution to request an affiliation.
  • Statement of Grant Purpose and Personal Statement
    • Applicants draft their Statement of Grant Purpose and Personal Statement.
    • Applicants should work with the Fulbright Program Advisor (FPA) or Faculty Associate for Fulbright Programs to develop their statements
    • Applicants should consult with a faculty member in their discipline for additional feedback on the statements.
    • Applicants may contact Dr. James Duban, Associate Dean for Research and National Scholarships in the Honors College for additional feedback.
  • Recommendations
    • Applicants request professional recommendations from three (3) individuals who are familiar with the applicant’s academic background and ability to successfully carryout a Fulbright. Recommenders submit their recommendations through the online system.
    • Applicants should provide recommenders with information about the Fulbright Program and a copy of their Statement of Grant Purpose and Personal Statement OR a description of their project, their qualifications, and why they are applying to Fulbright and the specific host country.
  • Foreign Language Evaluation Forms (as required)
    •  For countries requiring language skills, applicants must submit: (a) Language Self-Evaluation Form and (b) Foreign Language Evaluation that is completed by an instructor of the foreign language. The evaluator submits the evaluation through the online application system.
    • If the host country does not require a foreign language evaluation and applicants have the requisite language skills for the host country, then it is recommended that they submit the foreign language evaluation forms.
  • Transcripts
    • Applicants must upload transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions from which you received degrees as well as other institutions where you studied and received credit for coursework.
  • Supplementary Materials (Creative & Performing Arts Only)
    • ​​​​​​​ The Study/Research: Creative and Performing Arts award requires that applicants submit specific Supplementary Materials.

► Attend Fulbright Campus Committee Interviews

  • Applicants are required to attend the Fulbright Campus Committee Interviews. Applicants will be scheduled for an interview date and time and receive information about the interview process.
  • Applicants upload (DO NOT SUMBIT) application materials for the FPA to review and share with the Fulbright Campus Committee.

► Submit Final Application

  •  Applicants revise their applications based on the Fulbright Campus Committee Interviews and submit their final applications by the national deadline.
