IELI Student Testimonials

Dr. Ekinci Dr. Abdurrahman Ekinci, Professor, Mardin Artuklu University

Dr. Abdurrahman Ekinci, Professor, Mardin Artuklu University, Türkiye I first came to UNT’s IELI in the summer of 2011. This period remains in my memory as such a wonderful time as a young adult. I have very fond memories of the IELI teachers and staff who enabled me to enjoy and succeed at learning English. The desire to share those wonderful and unique memories with my family made me return to UNT for a year of sabbatical in 2014. During this period, my wife was a student at IELI. We can say we are a family that graduated from IELI! When we left Denton, UNT and returned to our country in 2015, we left our heart here in the same way. We mention UNT and Denton with fond memories all the time. We were very impressed by the warmth, friendly approach and sharing of the people who live in Denton. And now after eight years, I am back at UNT in Denton with my wife and 3 sons for another sabbatical year. I love Denton, UNT, and the nice memories of my time here!

Agueda Gomes Agueda Gomes, Angola

I am Agueda Gomes from Angola. In 2001 before I started the master’s program at Texas Woman's University (TWU), I had to have the English course completed. Therefore, the best English program option was the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) from the University of North Texas. IELI has an excellent English program because of how much it has contributed to my academic and professional life.

When I started IELI, I was placed at level 0, and from there, I graduated from level 6. The English program was very demanding for me and required long hours of study. It provided me a good English foundation in writing, talking, listening, and interpreting the language. Those skills helped me to gain my master’s degree and now in my doctoral program. Also, IELI facilitated me to participate and present at international conferences about issues related to physical education and sports in Angola/Africa, as well as to participate in the global network of my field of study.

If I were to describe my English tutors, they were concerned about my performance, attentive to my difficulties, and always pulled me along with extra work which were the keys to succeed in the program. At the end of my master’s program at TWU in adapted physical education, to my surprise, I was ranked in the group of the best graduate students of the United States of America.

Humberto Guaranta Mendonca, Brazil Humberto Guaranta Mendonca, Brazil

I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Paulista University in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

I came to Texas because my brother and sister-in-law have lived here since 2005. I did a careful research in the main institutions in Texas and my conclusion was UNT is the best one in infrastructure and experience. After one year studying here, I know that I made the best choice for my education.

I will do my master business administration (MBA) at G. Brint Ryan College of Business. I have already my admission letter and I am very excited to continue my studies at UNT.

About IELI. First of all, the professors. Each one is different but all of them teach with passion and joy and these qualities make a huge difference to students. Second of all, the great structure offered by IELI in terms of environment and staff. The staff is always ready to help students. When the pandemic started in the US, I thought with myself that the quality of classes will be decreased, but it didn’t happen. IELI acted quickly and we started classes online by ZOOM. We are all in the process of adapting, but the quality of teaching has been maintained.

I have only one thing to say to IELI: THANK YOU. I started and gave up on many English courses in my life. With IELI it was different, I reached my graduation. Many factors influenced me to accomplish my goal, but definitely the quality of IELI and professors were crucial for me to get to the end of course.

Shengjin (David) Zhou Shengjin (David) Zhou, China

I was a computer engineer in China. My friend recommended me to take this course at IELI and I want to improve my English skills. There are very nice teachers here, and they are very patient when you have a problem with learning.

I haven't decided which major to study, but it has to be a computer-related major. I plan to obtain several professional skills certificates during my studies. It is helpful for you to look for a job.

I chose IELI in order to acquire required English language proficiency to gain admission into UNT and IELI will make the whole admission process seamless. Remote classes have been very convenient, less stressful, and cost effective.

My future plan is to acquire a Bachelor and Master’s degree in business, and IELI presents an easier pathway towards that achievement.
