Off-Campus Housing

Most students (with the exception of Freshmen) live in apartments off-campus. Most apartment communities in Denton begin accepting rental applications in January prior to the start of the academic year. Most new leases begin July/August before the start of classes. 

  • Begin your apartment search EARLY.
  • Apartments within walking distance to campus fill up quickly!
  • Plan to budget at least $900-$1500 each month for rent and utilities.
  • Many Denton apartments are located on campus bus routes.
  • Search for local apartments at or at
  • Student Living Communities offer furnished apartments and assistance with finding suitable roommates.
  • More traditional apartment communities offer un-furnished apartments.
  • UNT does not provide temporary housing or accommodations when you arrive in the US.
  • Temporary accommodations may be arranged with a local hotel.

Signing an Apartment Lease
  • Personal Identification is required to sign a lease.
  • You may be asked to provide your passport, I-20 or DS 2019, UNT Student ID or Social Security Number (if you have one) to secure an apartment. 
  • Many apartments also require a security deposit up front which includes first and last month's rent.
  • Utilities (water, electricity) often require a deposit.

Housing & Dining On-Campus
  • On-campus housing in campus residence halls is limited.
  • Students are placed in rooms on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • On-Campus housing priority is given to Freshman.
