UNT’s Graduate Research Experiences Abroad Travel (GREAT) Grant provides UNT graduate
students with funding to undertake independent research abroad (outside of the U.S.)
in support of the student’s thesis/dissertation research. The GREAT Grant aims to
advance the research activities of UNT graduate students and enhance their global
perspectives by providing research experiences outside of the U.S.
The GREAT Grant provides two award types:
- Short-term: minimum of 14 days abroad, up to $3,500
- Long-term: minimum of 25 days abroad, up to $4,500

The International Travel Grant supports the professional development and global scholarship
of UNT graduate students. UNT graduate students must receive a Toulouse Graduate School
Travel Grant AND present research or a creative activity at a professional meeting/venue
abroad (outside of the U.S.)

Boren Awards are an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office
at the U.S. Department of Defense.
Boren Awards support intensive language study and cultural immersion abroad. Applicants
must demonstrate how the study of the critical language is important to U.S. national
security and demonstrate a commitment to working in positions critical to U.S. national
security through the federal government.
Boren Scholarships provide funding for undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens to study a critical language
abroad.
Boren Fellowships provide funding for graduate students who are U.S. citizens to study a critical language
and to undertake research, coursework, or an internship.
Maximum awards are determined by duration abroad.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a program offered by the U.S. Department of State for undergraduate and graduate
students who are U.S. citizens.
CLS fellowships support intensive language study and cultural immersion abroad through
a cohort-based program.
The fellowship covers the following types of expenses: (a) roundtrip airfare between
the U.S. and CLS Program site, (b) room, board, and CLS sponsored travel within the
host country, (c) language instruction and cultural programming, (d) textbooks and
language materials, and (e) visa application fees, if applicable. The CLS does not
cover expenses related to U.S. passport fees or medical exams or immunizations, if
applicable.
CLS fellowships support the study of the following critical languages:
- Arabic*
- Azerbaijani
- Chinese*
- Hindi
- Indonesian
- Japanese**
- Korean*
- Persian
- Portuguese
- Russian*
- Swahili
- Turkish
- Urdu
*Indicates that one-year of study prior to CLS is required.

Fall 2024 Programs and Funding Application Deadlines
RISE Germany: For Undergraduate STEM Majors
Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE Germany) provides opportunities
for undergraduate students from U.S. universities to complete a summer research internship
at a German university/research institution. German language is not required. Applicants
must have completed at least two (2) years of a degree program prior to the start
of their summer research internship.

Study Scholarships: For Master’s Studies in Germany
Highly qualified final-year undergraduate students or those who have received an undergraduate
degree in any discipline may apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship for a full master’s
degree program at a German university or for study at a German university as part
of a postgraduate or master’s degree program completed in the home country.

German Studies Research Grant: For Undergraduate or Graduate Students
German Studies Research Grants are awarded for one to two months to highly qualified
undergraduate and graduate students at US and Canadian universities nominated by the
professor supervising their German studies-relevant research.

Research Grants in Germany: For Doctoral or Post-Doc Students
Research funding is available for highly qualified doctoral students in a US/Canadian
program (or those who will be enrolled by the beginning of funding) interested in
a research project in Germany for funding between 2 and 12 months, or those who have
already completed a PhD (postdocs) for funding between 2 and 6 months. This program
has replaced the previous Short-Term and One-Year Research Grants.

Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle
These research grants are for doctoral candidates and young scientists and academics
whose doctoral degrees are supervised both by a university teacher at the home university
and an academic adviser at the host institute in Germany.
