J-1 Student Enrollment Requirements

J-1 Students must maintain full-time enrollment.

J-1 undergraduates must enroll in 12 credit hours.
- 9 credit hours must be face-to-face.
- Any enrollment over the 9 face-to-face credit hours may be online.
J-1 graduates must enroll in 9 credit hours.
- 6 credit hours must be face-to-face.
- Any enrollment over the 6 face-to-face credit hours may be online.

There are exceptions to the requirement for full-time status. Exceptions must be approved by an international advisor.

Academic Exceptions:

Initial difficulty with American teaching methods (first semester only)
Improper course level placement
Dissertation only
Final semester

Medical Exceptions:

If you are receiving treatment for a physical or mental health condition, you may submit a signed doctor's note signed by a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or Licensed Clinical Psychologist with your e-form for approval.
The note must be on office letterhead, signed by an MD, DO, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and indicate the recommended credit hours for enrollment in a specific enrollment term.
