Change in Degree Level or Program

After September 15, 2026, there are restrictions on when and how you can change your degree level or program.

• Graduate students are not permitted to change their degree level unless they complete a master’s degree and then change levels to a doctoral level degree.
• Undergraduate students are not permitted to change their degree level until they have completed one full academic year in the U.S.
• Students must apply for and receive a new I-20 through iNorthTX before the end of the grace period.
  • New financial documents that are less than one year old must be submitted to receive an I-20 for a new degree level.
• If remaining in the U.S., an Extension of Stay must be filed before the end of the grace period.
• If exiting the U.S. and returning to start a new degree level, students must verify that they have a valid F-1 visa before re-entering the U.S. with a new level I-20.

Change in Major Field of Study

After September 15, 2026, there are restrictions on when and how you can change your major field of study.

• Graduate students are not permitted to change their major field of study.
• Undergraduate students are not permitted to change their major field of study until they have completed one full academic year in the U.S.
  • To change your major field of study as an F-1 undergraduate student, work with your Academic Advising department to request your change of major, then complete the Request for a Revised I-20 in iNorthTX.
